    THROWBACK Mixtape (Mix CD) inserts!!! 😱 Way ba THROWBACK Mixtape (Mix CD) inserts!!! 😱 Way back in ‘08 when I first started pushing myself as a DJ, I recorded a mix/blend tape every few months. I’d burn them to CD and give them out to fellow dancers for their classes. I did a series called “I Can Make You Dance!” and this here was Volume 6. Each mix got better and the branding did too. I bought the CD Label Stomper, if you remember those. Lol My first DJ name was Renie Ren, there’s a story behind it I’ll share another time. I felt this name had an old school early hip hop sound. Once I started to build my name more and lock down more gigs, I opted for a more refined name of Renz or Renzo. Still a play on my birth name, T-REN-T. Get it?!? lol Why do I have such a stack of these CD inserts still? Well, I only made about 50 or so copies of this mix and it was less expensive to order 500 “flyers” than just 50, so i had many leftover and since I keep everything…..I’m a hoarder for real.     THROWBACK Circa ‘09: My 1st attempt at a DJ logo THROWBACK Circa ‘09: My 1st attempt at a DJ logo and graphic. 🤦🏻‍♂️ This graphic was for a DJ laptop skin/cover. Way back when maybe 2009/2010, many years before Adobe Illustrator entered my life, I was teaching myself photoshop to create DJ event flyers. I needed a logo to start building my DJ brand and since Photoshop was all I knew, that’s what I used. I think I overused every tool the program had, warp, distort, gradients, stroke and so on. Extremely amateur, but I guess this is how you learn. Lol You can see a silhouette of a head with a cap on in the background. This is my actual head from a photoshoot that I filled with color and tweaked a bit. It was to be my standalone moniker for a while. Why this you ask? Well, being super insecure as a DJ for years, wearing a hat became my security blanket, similar to dancing, I’ve alway had a hat on performing. 🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🥹 lol Also, I incorporated the tagline #goodmusicgoodpeoplegoodtimes I’d been using and still used time and again through 2024. This was my goal was for every event.     📷 Pop-Up Photoshoot 📸 About halfway through 📷 Pop-Up Photoshoot 📸 About halfway through a 2 month long pop-up shop and just after closing up for the night, I set up a tripod, grabbed a remote, and proceeded to hold a solo photoshoot in the space. I took a plethora of photos around the space with different angles, in front of different racks, an outfit change or two. It was fun, I felt like I was in the flagship store that I have been dreaming of. It was such a cool and motivating feeling. Anyway, here is one of my favorites from the shoot where I’m posed in front of the checkout counter. I’m in my element surrounded by my designs, my creations, my hard work, my vision, and my entire savings. I created this brand because I want to share my joy around music and connect with others that see and feel music the way I do. My sweatshirt says it all, Music Brings People Together. I had an idea to replicate a turntable platter with the Akepele logo as the slip mat. If you look you can see the red speed strobe beaming on the platter too. It’s all in the details.     Another @akepeleapparel Sticker evolution!!! Fro Another @akepeleapparel Sticker evolution!!! From the beginning, I was using the umlaut “ä” as the brand identifier. I liked it but it lacked style, boring if you will! Soon after I introduced the Lion with a bucket hat. My vision was to have a brand symbol to represent strength, leadership, and pride but not in an aggressive manner. Rather calm cool and collected yet know who you are and what you’re capable of. More on this in another post. The quality and designs of the stickers evolved as I got more comfortable, confident, and seasoned as a brand owner and creative director.
