Matt Nelkin is a DJ, producer, record collector, and founder of Liquid Beat Records, whose work is rooted in a deep love for soulful, forward thinking music. Drawing from years of experience digging through records and performing, his sound reflects an eclectic mix of styles, anchored in the golden age of hip-hop but always pushing toward new and unexpected directions. His approach blends classic influences with a passion for discovery, resulting in sets and productions that feel timeless and fresh.

A dedicated advocate for vinyl and DJ culture, Matt has maintained a hands on, crate digging ethos even as technology has transformed the landscape. His performances, including residencies at respected Portland venues like Holocene, Saucebox, and Produce Row, are known for their ability to balance crowd energy with selections that lean slightly left of center, introducing audiences to sounds they may not expect.

In 2011, he launched Liquid Beat Records as an outlet for music he believes in, focusing on hip-hop, R&B, funk, soul, and house with a cohesive, enduring aesthetic. The label has built a strong reputation for quality, releasing a diverse roster of artists that stays true to its vinyl centric roots. In addition to curating and executive producing releases, Matt has contributed his own production work over the years, including in his 2022 solo debut on the label with the well received 7” single “Under Sheet,” featuring dancehall vocalist Ce’Cile.
