Equally as important as Wild Style and Beat Street, Graffiti Rock (Pilot Episode) is a must watch for those seeking a solid representation early 80s hip hop. Complete with performances, fashion breakdown, and a brief DJ tutorial – “back and forth,” Jk.Â
Released in 1984, Graffiti Rock was created by and hosted by artist, musician, writer, and filmmaker, Michael Holman, who at the time, was the manager for the infamous New York City Breakers that are featured in the episode. Alongside the NYC Breakers, the episode features performances by Run D.M.C., Kool Moe Dee and Special K of the Treacherous Three, Shannon, and DJ Jimmie Jaz.Â
This episode is a great time capsule and still enjoyable to watch every so often. I’ve embedded a link for you to watch again or for the first time. Enjoy.Â
